Column flashback: Michael Phelps’ amazing exploits in the pool

Here’s a column I filed after Michael Phelps shattered fellow swimmer Mark Spitz’s record of seven gold medals in a single Olympics. Phelps accomplished the feat in the summer of 2008; Spitz made his mark in Munch in 1972.

Impressions of Dr. J

By Ed Odeven
TOKYO (May 17, 2015) — Former NBA player and ex-University of Hawaii head coach Bob Nash has known Julius Erving since before their college days and long before millions of sports fans watched Dr. J’s amazing exploits during his pro career on the basketball court.

Sunday’s column in The Japan Times traces their friendship back to 1968 and Nash’s recollections and impressions about Erving over the years: in high school, in college, on a European tour, in the Rucker Tournament, in the ABA, in the NBA.

Nash has spent the past three seasons coaching the Toyama Grouses of the bj-league (Basketball Japan League).
